The short answer

The two sweet spots are the inter-monsoon transitions — April to early May and October to November. These are the calmest, clearest windows of the year: light winds, glassy anchorages and superb underwater visibility. If you want steadier sailing breeze, the southeast monsoon (May–September) delivers dependable wind, cooler air and drier skies. The northwest monsoon (December–March) is warm and lush but more humid, with lighter, shiftier winds and heavier showers.

December to March — the northwest monsoon

Warm, humid and green. Winds come from the northwest, tend to be light and variable, and are punctuated by short, heavy tropical downpours — especially around January. The upside is calm water on the usually-exposed southeast coasts and warm, still anchorages. Air temperatures sit around 28–31°C. Good for relaxed, low-mileage cruising if you don't mind the odd squall.

April to early May — the first calm window

Arguably the finest all-round period. The northwest monsoon fades, winds drop light, and the sea turns glassy. Visibility peaks — often 25–30 metres — making this prime snorkelling and diving season. Warm, settled and beautiful. If your dates are flexible, aim here.

May to September — the southeast monsoon

The sailor's season. Winds settle into a steadier southeast trade of 10–20 knots, the air is a touch cooler and drier, and passages become more reliable. Seas on exposed south-facing coasts get choppier and some beaches collect seaweed, but for actual sailing this is the most dependable wind of the year. July and August are the breeziest.

October to November — the second calm window

The southeast monsoon eases and the water flattens again for the second inter-monsoon lull. Like April–May, expect light winds, calm anchorages and excellent visibility, with warm seas and long sunny days. A quieter, gentle time to cruise the Inner Islands.
