Sailing Thailand: Phuket and the Andaman Sea

Thailand's Andaman coast is one of the most cinematic sailing grounds on earth: sheer limestone karsts rising sheer from warm, jade-green water, hidden lagoons you enter through sea caves, and long white beaches backed by jungle. Warm seas year-round, short hops between islands and a big fleet of comfortable catamarans make it a superb winter-sun escape when Europe is cold. The short answer

Charter a catamaran from Phuket and cruise east into Phang Nga Bay and south toward Phi Phi, Krabi and Koh Lanta. The sailing season runs November to April, the dry north-east monsoon, when the sea is calm and the skies are clear — avoid the May–October south-west monsoon, when it's wet and windy. Distances are modest and the water is bath-warm (28–30°C) all season. This is a ground made for catamarans: shallow draught for the reefy anchorages, deck space for the heat, and stability at anchor. The cruising grounds

From a Phuket base — usually the marinas on the island's east coast such as Yacht Haven or Ao Po — you have several directions to choose from, all within a relaxed week.

• Phang Nga Bay — the headline. A vast, shallow bay studded with hundreds of limestone islands and hongs (collapsed cave-lagoons you paddle into at low tide). Koh Hong and the area around James Bond Island are the classics; anchor early to beat the day-trip longtails.
• The Phi Phi Islands — dramatic twin islands with Maya Bay (of The Beach fame), turquoise water and lively Ton Sai. Busy by day, calmer at anchor overnight.
• Krabi and Railay — the mainland coast of soaring limestone cliffs, beloved by rock climbers, with beaches reachable only by boat.
• Koh Lanta and the southern islands — quieter, with the clearer water and reefs of Koh Rok and Koh Ha further out for snorkelling.

Season and weather

Get the season right and Thailand is effortless; get it wrong and it's a washout.

• November–April (dry, north-east monsoon): the charter season. Calm seas, light winds, sunny skies, sea temperature around 28–30°C. December to March are the peak, driest months.
• May–October (wet, south-west monsoon): heavy rain, bigger seas and gusty winds off the Andaman Sea. Most charter operations wind right down.

Winds in season are generally light, so expect a fair amount of motoring or motor-sailing between anchorages — this is a cruising and swimming holiday more than a hard-sailing one.
